TITLE: Tree Climber
Not a care in the world; this little 8-year-old--the son of a family friend, couldn't resist climbing the tree growing outside of his grandmother's Ainslie Wood West condo.
I remember doing that as a kid. The climbing was thrilling, knowing that there was danger in what I was doing while still feeling confidant and independent enough to make my way unhindered. Reaching the top of a tree or high embankment felt like such an accomplishment. Being able to peer over my surroundings from the vantage point was just additional reward.
The view wasn't always spectacular from above. I usually could only see a little further down a street than I could at ground level. Only occasionally I had opportunities to climb somewhere that enabled me to see clear across whatever town I lived in but even then, the main thing for me was the experience of the climb.
It was always more than a literal letdown to have to descend and go on back to everyday living.
