TITLE: Reading On

MEDIUM: Photograph

I am really impressed by the fact that I live in an age when authors like J. K. Rowling can become billionaires mainly from writing books. It's actually not so much the money part that thrills me as it is the fact that it indicates that millions of people, young and old, still love reading books just for the pleasure of reading them.

It's really easy to think otherwise these days. I have met a number of peopleľadults, not just children, that have told me flat out that they don't like to read. These aren't even people with learning disabilities and disorders, either. They just can't get into it.

I try not to criticize but I also can't help but think of it as a shame. Besides them, people in general seem to spend so much time video game playing, text messaging, e-mailing, Web-surfing, downloading, blogging, online chatting, "Friending", "Tweeting", TV watching, boozing and getting stoned that book reading seems to becoming a lost form of entertainment, healthy form of escapism and way to enlightenment. That is, until you actually look for signs that readers of the printed word are very much still around.

Seeing this guy engrossed in his book outside a coffeehouse in Hamilton's Central neighbourhood is such a sign. Read on, Buddy! Read on!
