Steeltown Carioca Girls

The Hamilton Mardigras Carnival throws an authentic Caribbean festival every August; typically on the weekend immediately following the one on which Toronto holds its own Caribana parade.

I didn't wait for this parade to get going. I went behind the scenes to shoot the participants as they were assembling their teams and setting up their elaborate and colourful costumes. There were other shutterbugs back there behind Hamilton City Hall but most seemed to be ignoring these girls who were all ready and offering to have their pictures taken by anyone willing. I thought they looked fantastic, and was quite happy to photograph them. The red of their costumes really made them stand out, and their bright eyes and beautiful smiles--as they struck poses, caused other onlookers to gasp and say, "Hey, look at them!" Sure enough, that got the other photographers wanting to take their pictures too.

This image won second place in the Hands Across the Border category.
