TITLE: Black Panthers
MEDIUM: Graphite-Wash Drawing (Original)
This was strictly a contracted piece. The client specifically wanted black jaguars which made doing this image all the more pleasurable. The purchaser was giving the image as a surprise gift to someone close to her. Reportedly, neither of them had ever seen black panthers in real life and thought, perhaps from watching old suspense films with bad lighting and cinematography, that the coats of cats like these were all jet-black. I told the buyer that it's quite common to still be able to see the rosettes on melanistic jaguars and leopards in the right light, and if you're close enough to see them. It's like a mesmerizing black-on-black effect. I advised her that I could duplicate the appearance of such a coat and showed her "Jaguars on Rock", a drawing I had made of a melanistic male jaguar resting on a rock with a non-melanistic female (that one I still own--one of the few art pieces I don't want to sell). She agreed and was quite satisfied with the results. So was the recipient, I've been told.
