TITLE: Lioness & Lion

MEDIUM: Graphite-Wash Drawing (20x30" Original)

A portrait of a relationship.

Initially, I wrote the narrative accompanying the Statement of Authenticity to this piece to raise a little awareness about the history of lions, and the mystique and mythology that surrounds them, but conveying a feeling of romance was the greater intent behind the work. Since creating "Jaguars on Rock" nine years earlier, I just wanted to do another wildlife illustration that on a general level inspired notions of love, dedication and pride between two lovers. On a personal level, it was to signify marriage, as Kim and I were only one month away from become becoming husband and wife.

Kim is such an important part of my life and an attention-getter, and so the lioness stands out in the foreground with her head turned to make eye-contact with the observer. I drew the lion in profile with relaxed ears so that I could really show off his dark mane, and also give a sense of my own personality. That is, I'm right there beside my wife, trying to show courage–although I'm often a nervous wreck, and constantly on the lookout for opportunities that will lead to an auspicious future for us both. Sometimes, I'm not one to make eye-contact out of fear that my vulnerability will become know through my gaze.
