TITLE: Lion Cubs
MEDIUM: Graphite-Wash Drawing (19.5x27" Original)
This is one of a few pieces I did while working at Hamilton East Kiwanis Boys' and Girls' Club. I never really aspired to showing kids arts and crafts but I wound up with a job doing just that. This is where I met my future wife, Kim. She was already working there as a crafts teacher. I was mainly showing kids how to draw and paint. The very young children got a kick out of helping me make large wall murals of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Fido Dido. For the somewhat older kids who expressed an interest in realist type art but thought they couldn't muster the skills or patience to accomplish such work, I showed them my approach to wildlife art. Pencil drawing, as opposed to painting.
I love the animals of Africa. Especially the elephants and lions. I've done a lot of lions in my time. These were the first cubs I ever drew. Looking back, I think it was the daily presence of all the children that subconsciously motivated me to do this piece. To me, the cubs represent being children, and being friends. I found that many adults who had children said that the image reminded them more of their own children, and family life.
